Omnium insurance for commercial vehicles

A traffic accident can quickly lead to significant damage to your company vehicle. The mandatory third-party liability insurance only covers the damage you cause to others, but not the damage to your own vehicle.

With comprehensive insurance for company vehicles, you protect your fleet against damage caused by, among other things, accidents, theft, vandalism, or natural forces. This way, you prevent your business from having to bear unexpected expenses when a vehicle is damaged.

The specialists at Van Dessel will help you choose the right plan, from limited comprehensive to full comprehensive, tailored to the value of your vehicles and their use within your company.

What is omnium insurance for commercial vehicles?

An omnium insurance is a supplementary car insurance that covers damage to your own vehicle, even if you are responsible for the accident yourself. This insurance is an extension of the mandatory third-party liability (TPL) insurance and protects your vehicle against various risks.

There are generally two types:

  • Partial omnium
  • This policy covers several specific damages, such as fire, broken glass, theft, or damage caused by natural forces
  • Full omnium (comprehensive omnium): This option provides the most comprehensive protection and compensates almost all damages to the vehicle, regardless of whether you are at fault in the accident. Internal defects are not covered

Which option is best suited depends, among other things, on the value of the vehicle, the vehicle's age, and its use within your company.

What are the benefits?

Covers, depending on the chosen policy, damage to your company vehicle in the event of an accident for which you are personally liable or when the liable third party cannot be identified.

Covers damage caused by fire, theft, vandalism or burglary.

Covers damage caused by fire, theft, vandalism or burglary.

Covers glass breakage and collisions with animals.

Who is this insurance for?

A comprehensive insurance policy is interesting for companies that want to optimally protect their vehicles against financial damage.

This insurance is especially relevant for:

  • Companies with new or recent company vehicles
  • Enterprises with leased or financed vehicles
  • Companies with a heavily used fleet
  • Transport and logistics businesses
  • Service companies with delivery vans

For older vehicles or vehicles with a lower value, a limited comprehensive insurance may sometimes suffice. For new or expensive vehicles, a full comprehensive insurance policy is usually recommended. For larger fleets, there are also alternative formulas available, such as stop-loss.

What is covered and what is not?

What is covered? Depending on the chosen plan, a comprehensive insurance policy can, among other things, provide coverage for:

  • Damage to the vehicle caused by a road traffic accident
  • Fire or explosion
  • Theft or attempted theft
  • Vandalism or malicious acts by third parties
  • Glass breakage
  • Damage caused by storm, hail or other natural events
  • Collision with animals

What is not covered?

  • Normal wear and tear or mechanical breakdowns
  • Damage caused by intentional acts or fraud
  • Damage falling outside the policy terms and conditions
  • Use of the vehicle in a manner not covered by the policy
  • Bodily injury sustained by the driver

How much does this insurance cost?

The premium of an all-risk insurance is determined by various factors, such as:

  • The value and age of the vehicle, its power and driving safety features
  • The type of vehicle (passenger car, van, truck)
  • The usage of the vehicle
  • The chosen all-risk formula (partial or full coverage)
  • The selected deductible
  • The claims history of the driver or company

Companies with multiple vehicles often opt for a fleet insurance policy, in which the all-risk coverage is integrated into a single policy for the entire fleet. This can be administratively simpler and financially more attractive.

What is the difference between liability insurance and comprehensive insurance?

The third-party liability insurance only covers damage you cause to others. A comprehensive insurance also covers damage to your own vehicle.

What is the difference between partial omnium and full omnium?

A partial comprehensive policy covers specific types of damage such as fire, theft, glass breakage, natural forces, and collisions with animals. A full comprehensive policy also covers damage resulting from an accident for which you are liable yourself or where the liable third party cannot be identified.

Is comprehensive insurance mandatory for company vehicles?

No. In Belgium, only liability insurance is mandatory. Comprehensive insurance is an additional coverage that is mainly interesting for new or valuable vehicles.

Is comprehensive insurance interesting for older vehicles?

That depends on the value of the vehicle. For older vehicles, people often opt for limited comprehensive insurance or only third-party liability insurance.

Can I include a comprehensive insurance policy in a fleet insurance?

Yes. If your company has several vehicles, the comprehensive coverage can be integrated into a fleet insurance policy for the entire fleet.
