Comprehensive insurance

A traffic accident can quickly lead to significant damage to your car or truck. The mandatory third-party liability insurance only covers damage you cause to others, but not the damage to your own vehicle.

With a comprehensive insurance for vehicles and trucks, you protect your fleet against damage caused by, among others, accidents, theft, vandalism, or natural forces. This way, your company avoids unexpected expenses when a vehicle or truck is damaged.

The specialists at Van Dessel assist you in choosing the right comprehensive insurance formula, from limited to full coverage, tailored to the value of your vehicles, trucks, and their use within your business.

What is comprehensive insurance for vehicles and trucks?

A comprehensive insurance is a supplementary vehicle insurance that covers damage to your own vehicle or truck, even if you are responsible for the accident.

This insurance is an extension of the compulsory civil liability insurance and protects your vehicles against various risks.

There are generally two types:

Limited comprehensive: This option covers specific cases of damage, such as fire, glass breakage, theft, or damage caused by natural forces.

Full comprehensive: This option provides the most extensive protection and compensates for virtually all damage to the vehicle or truck, regardless of whether you are at fault in the accident. Internal defects are not covered.

Which option is best suited depends, among other things, on the value, age, and use of the vehicle or truck within your business.

What are the benefits?

Covers, depending on the chosen plan, damage to your vehicle or truck in an accident for which you are responsible or when the liable third party cannot be identified.

Covers damage caused by fire, theft, vandalism, or burglary.

Covers damage caused by natural forces such as storms, hail, or flooding.

Covers glass breakage and collisions with animals.

Who is this insurance for?

A comprehensive insurance is of interest to companies that want to optimally protect their vehicles and trucks against financial loss.

This insurance is particularly relevant for:

  • Companies with new or recent vehicles and trucks
  • Businesses with leased or financed vehicles
  • Companies with an intensively used vehicle fleet
  • Transport and logistics companies
  • Service companies with delivery vans

For older vehicles or vehicles with a lower value, a limited comprehensive insurance may sometimes suffice. For new or expensive vehicles, a fully comprehensive insurance is usually recommended. For larger fleets, alternative solutions are also available, such as a stop-loss solution.

What is covered and what is not?

What is covered? Depending on the selected plan, comprehensive insurance can, among other things, provide coverage for:

  • Damage to the vehicle caused by a road traffic accident
  • Fire or explosion
  • Theft or attempted theft
  • Vandalism or malicious acts by third parties
  • Glass breakage
  • Damage caused by storm, hail or other natural events
  • Collision with animals

What is not covered?

  • Normal wear and tear or mechanical breakdown
  • Damage caused by intentional acts or fraud
  • Damage falling outside the policy terms and conditions
  • Use of the vehicle in a manner not covered by the policy
  • Bodily injury sustained by the driver

How much does this insurance cost?

The premium for comprehensive insurance is determined by several factors, such as:

  • The value and age of the vehicle, the engine power, and available safety features
  • The type of vehicle (passenger car, van, or truck)
  • The use of the vehicle
  • The selected comprehensive insurance plan (limited or full coverage)
  • The chosen deductible
  • The claim history of the driver or company

Companies with multiple vehicles often opt for a fleet insurance policy, where comprehensive coverage is integrated into a single policy for the entire fleet. This can be both administratively simpler and financially more advantageous.

What is the difference between liability insurance and comprehensive insurance?

The liability insurance only covers damage you cause to third parties. A comprehensive insurance also

covers damage to your own vehicle or truck.

What is the difference between limited and comprehensive coverage?

Limited casco covers specific damage cases such as fire, theft, glass breakage, natural forces, and collisions with animals. Comprehensive casco also covers damage caused by an accident for which you are liable yourself or when the responsible third party cannot be identified.

Is comprehensive insurance mandatory for vehicles and trucks?

No. In Belgium, only third-party liability insurance is mandatory. Comprehensive insurance is an additional coverage that is mainly of interest for new or valuable vehicles and trucks.

Is comprehensive insurance interesting for older vehicles?

That depends on the value of the vehicle. For older vehicles, people often choose limited comprehensive coverage or just a third-party liability insurance.

Can I include comprehensive insurance in a fleet policy?

Yes. If your company has multiple vehicles or trucks, the comprehensive coverage can be integrated into a fleet insurance policy for the entire fleet.
