Business interruption insurance

A fire, storm, water damage, or technical malfunction can shut down your business for days, weeks, or even months. While your fixed costs continue, your revenue may (partially) disappear. p>With a business interruption insurance policy, you protect the financial continuity of your company after an insured incident. It covers the loss of income and gives you the opportunity to restart your operations.

What is a business interruption insurance?

A business interruption insurance aims to protect your company's operating result during the compensation period when the activities that contribute to your turnover are wholly or partially interrupted by a covered material damage event, such as fire or water damage.

It does not cover the material damage itself, which is included under the fire insurance, but rather the financial impact of the interruption of your activities.

For example, the insurance helps to cover fixed costs, such as wages, rent, and loans, during the restart period.

What are the benefits?

After an incident, it can often take weeks or months before a company is fully operational again. While business activities come to a halt, many costs continue as usual.

A business interruption insurance policy helps protect your company’s financial continuity during this period. This way, you prevent a temporary interruption from leading to cash flow problems or threatening your company’s continuity.

Depending on the coverages chosen, the insurance can, among other things, provide compensation for:

The loss of gross margin after an insured damage event.

Fixed costs such as wages, rent and repayments.

Additional costs to resume activities more quickly.

The financial impact of a temporary closure.

Who is this insurance for?

A business interruption insurance is essential for any company that is financially affected when operations come to a full or partial halt, such as:

  • SMEs and large companies
  • Manufacturing companies
  • Retail businesses and shops
  • Hospitality businesses
  • Offices and service providers
  • Liberal professions

Are you dependent on a single location , specific machines, or limited production capacity? Then the risk of income loss due to damage is even greater. Together, we analyze how vulnerable your business is and what coverage is recommended.

What is covered and what is not?

What is covered?

  • Loss of gross profit due to business interruption following fire or water damage
  • Ongoing fixed costs during the business interruption
  • Additional costs incurred to resume operations more quickly
  • Losses incurred during the agreed indemnity period

What is not covered?

  • Loss of turnover due to economic conditions or reduced demand
  • Losses resulting from events not covered under your underlying property insurance
  • Business interruption due to planned maintenance
  • Losses incurred outside the agreed indemnity period

How much does this insurance cost?

The premium of a business interruption insurance policy is determined, among other things, by:

  • Your annual turnover and gross profit
  • The amount of your fixed costs&nbsp
  • The chosen indemnity period (for example 6, 12, or 18 months)
  • The nature of your activities
  • Your claims history

A realistic calculation of your gross profit is crucial. An estimate that is too low may lead to underinsurance and therefore insufficient compensation in the event of damage.

We will guide you through this calculation and ensure a balance between optimal protection and a fair premium.

What is the difference between a fire insurance and a business interruption insurance?

A fire insurance covers material damage. A business interruption insurance covers loss of income in case of stoppage.

How long will my loss of revenue be compensated?

That depends on the compensation period chosen in your policy, for example 6,12 or 18 months. This period should be aligned with the realistic restart time of your business.

How is the loss of gross profit calculated?

The compensation is calculated based on your expected turnover and fixed costs. An accurate prior estimate is important to avoid underinsurance.

Are you also protected when the cause lies outside your company?

Not only damage within your own building can impact your operations. External events, such as a closed-off area or a supplier going out of business, can also put pressure on your revenue. Depending on the selected coverages, these risks can also be included in your business interruption insurance.

Is business interruption insurance mandatory?

No, it is not legally required. However, it is often crucial to help prevent your business from facing financial difficulties after serious damage.
