Guaranteed income insurance

As an entrepreneur or self-employed person, your income is directly dependent on your ability to work. If you become unable to work for an extended period due to an accident or illness, it can have a significant financial impact on you and your family.

With income protection insurance, you safeguard your personal income in the event of disability. This insurance provides a monthly payment when you are temporarily or permanently unable to work. This way, you maintain financial stability and can fully focus on your recovery.

Van Dessel helps you put together a solution tailored to your professional activity, income, and personal situation.

What is a guaranteed income insurance?

Income protection insurance safeguards self-employed individuals, company directors, and professionals against loss of income when they are unable to work due to illness or an accident.

If you become incapacitated for work, the insurance pays a monthly benefit that replaces part of your income. This way, you can continue to pay your fixed expenses, personal costs, and financial obligations.

The insurance can be tailored to various factors, such as:

  • Your current income
  • The waiting period before the benefit starts
  • The duration of the benefit
  • The level of coverage you desire

Because every entrepreneur's situation is different, customization is essential. Van Dessel guides you in determining an appropriate and balanced protection.

What are the benefits?

Covers loss of income in case of incapacity for work due to illness or accident.

Covers a monthly payment to maintain your standard of living.

Covers long-term incapacity for work up to a predetermined final age.

Covers financial security for you and your family during your recovery.

Who is this insurance for?

An income protection insurance is primarily intended for people whose income depends on their personal work.

Typical target groups are:

  • Self-employed as main profession
  • Business leaders and managers
  • Liberal professionals (doctors, lawyers, consultants, ...)
  • Self-employed with a company
  • Entrepreneurs who want to protect their personal income

For employees, there is usually already social protection through the employer. For the self-employed, however, that protection is significantly lower, making this insurance often an important part of sound financial planning.

What is covered and what is not?

What is covered?

  • Incapacity for work due to illness
  • Incapacity for work resulting from an accident
  • Partial or total incapacity for work
  • Long-term incapacity for work
  • A monthly benefit during the period you are unable to work

What is not covered?

  • Incapacity for work resulting from intentional acts
  • Pre-existing medical conditions (unless accepted by the insurer)
  • Certain high-risk activities
  • Incapacity for work occurring during the waiting period

How much does this insurance cost?

The premium of an income protection insurance is determined based on various factors.

Important elements include:

  • Your age
  • Your occupation and occupational risk
  • The amount of the desired monthly benefit
  • The chosen waiting period (for example, 30, 60, or 90 days)
  • The end age of the insurance
  • Your medical condition

Because these parameters can vary greatly, a personal analysis is important. This way, the insurance can be correctly tailored to your income and financial needs.

Additionally, in certain cases, the premium may be tax-deductible, which can significantly reduce the actual cost.

What is the difference between an income protection insurance and an accident insurance?

An accident insurance only covers disability caused by an accident. An income protection insurance goes further and also covers disability caused by illness, which in practice is the most common cause.

How much income can I insure?

In most cases, you can insure up to about 60 to 80% of your income. The exact limit depends on the insurer and your personal situation.

From when am I entitled to receive benefits in case of incapacity for work?

That depends on the chosen waiting period. Common waiting periods are 30, 60, or 90 days. Generally, the longer the waiting period, the lower the premium.

Is insurance for guaranteed income tax deductible?

In many cases, the premiums are tax-deductible as a business expense for the self-employed. However, the tax treatment may vary depending on your status and structure.

Do I really need a guaranteed income insurance as a self-employed person?

Self-employed individuals usually receive a limited benefit through social security in case of incapacity for work. For many entrepreneurs, this is not enough to maintain their standard of living. This insurance supplements that loss of income.
