Goods insurance (Cargo)

Goods can be exposed to various risks during transport. An accident, theft, damage during loading and unloading, or extreme weather conditions can lead to the loss or damage of your goods.

With a goods insurance, you protect your business against these financial risks. This insurance covers damage to goods during transport, regardless of whether the transport takes place by road, sea, air, or rail.

The specialists at Van Dessel help you put together a transport insurance policy that matches your logistics chain, the nature of your goods, and the mode of transport.

What is a goods insurance policy?

A cargo insurance (also known as goods insurance) covers the value of goods during transport. If goods are damaged, lost or stolen during transport, this insurance can compensate for the financial loss.

The coverage may apply to transport:

  • By road
  • By sea or inland waterways
  • By air
  • By rail
  • During loading, unloading and temporary storage

This insurance can be of interest to both companies shipping goods and businesses that regularly receive goods.

What are the benefits?

Covers loss or theft of goods during transport.

Covers damage during loading, unloading or temporary storage.

The insurance can be tailored to specific transport routes, means of transport, or logistics chains.

This may include, among others:

  • Manufacturing companies that ship goods to customers
  • Trading companies or wholesalers
  • Import and export companies
  • E-commerce companies with logistical shipments
  • Companies that transport valuable goods
  • Businesses with international supply chains

What is covered and what is not?

What is covered?

  • Damage to goods caused by a transport accident
  • Theft or loss of goods during transit
  • Damage during loading or unloading
  • Damage caused by fire, storm or other external events
  • Damage to goods during handling in transit

What is not covered?

  • Damage caused by inadequate packaging
  • Damage resulting from normal wear and tear or inherent defects of the goods

How much does this insurance cost?

The premium of a goods insurance is determined based on various factors, such as:

  • The nature and value of the goods
  • The frequency of shipments
  • The mode of transport (road, sea, air, rail)
  • The geographical zones in which you transport

What is the difference between a CMR insurance and a cargo insurance?

A CMR insurance protects the carrier against liability for damage to goods. A cargo insurance insures the value of the goods themselves, usually taken out by the owner of the goods.

Is goods transport insurance mandatory?

No. This insurance is not legally required, but it is strongly recommended if you regularly have goods transported.

Are goods also insured when the transport is outsourced?

Yes. Even when you outsource transport to an external carrier, a goods transport insurance can protect your goods.

Does the insurance also apply to international transports?

Yes. The coverage can be extended to international transport by road, sea, air, or rail.

What happens when goods arrive damaged?

When damage is identified, a claim can be filed with the insurer. The insurance will cover the damage according to the terms of the policy.
