Liability insurance for logistics service provision

As a logistics service provider, you manage, transport, or store goods belonging to third parties. Damage, loss, or delay can lead to significant claims for damages.

The logistics liability insurance protects your company against the financial consequences of errors or damages during your logistics activities.

What is liability insurance for logistics services?

The liability insurance for logistics services covers your liability as a logistics service provider for damage to customers' goods.

This includes, among other things:

  • Storage and warehousing
  • Order picking and handling
  • Packaging and repackaging
  • Distribution and transport
  • Inventory management

If goods are damaged, lost, or improperly handled, your customer may hold you liable. This insurance covers that risk within the contractual and legal framework.

What are the benefits?

Covers damage to goods during storage and handling.

Covers loss or damage for which you are held liable.

Covers contractual liability within logistics agreements.

Covers legal costs in disputes with clients.

Who is this insurance for?

This insurance is intended for companies active in:

  • Logistics services
  • Warehousing and storage
  • Distribution centers
  • Expedition and freight forwarding
  • E-fulfilment and e-commerce logistics
  • Supply chain management
  • Terminal operations
  • Customs activities

Companies that carry out additional logistics activities alongside their core business can also benefit from this coverage.

Van Dessel analyses your contracts, liability limitations, and operational risks.

What is covered and what is not?

What is covered?

  • Damage to goods in storage
  • Loss of entrusted goods
  • Damage during handling or internal transport
  • Legal defence in the event of a liability claim

What is not covered?

  • Intentional damage
  • Normal wear and tear or inherent defects of the goods
  • Damage falling outside the contractually agreed liability
  • Fines or delays without resulting property damage (unless explicitly covered)

How much does this insurance cost?

The premium depends on:

  • The type of logistics activities

  • The general terms and conditions of your company
  • Deviating contracts with clients
  • Your safety and control systems

A logistics center for pharmaceutical products has a different risk profile than a standard distribution hub.

Van Dessel negotiates with specialized insurers and tailors the coverage to your supply chain.

What is the difference between a CMR insurance and a logistics liability insurance?

CMR Insurance covers your liability as a carrier of goods on behalf of third parties. The liability insurance for logistics services covers your liability as a logistics service provider during all possible activities, including storage, handling, transport...

Am I insured for all the goods in my warehouse?

This depends on the General Terms and Conditions that are applied and how the policy is drawn up. We always advise using the General Logistics Terms and Conditions because these define the obligations and liabilities of both the logistics service provider and the client. This enables us to identify which insurances are necessary.

Does this insurance also cover damage caused by my staff?

Yes. Damage caused by employees during their work is generally covered by the insurance.

Are contractual liability limitations automatically insured?

No, contracts that deviate from the General Terms and Conditions of the logistics service provider must always be submitted to the insurer.

Is a logistics liability insurance mandatory?

It is usually not legally required, but is often contractually required by clients.
