Hospitalisation insurance

A hospitalisation insurance is one of the most valued extralegal benefits for employees. It protects staff against high medical costs when they unexpectedly end up in hospital due to illness, an accident, or childbirth.

For employers, a collective hospitalisation insurance is also a powerful tool to attract and retain talent. It shows that you invest in the well-being and security of your employees. Van Dessel assists companies in setting up a hospitalisation insurance that fits their HR policy, budget, and personnel structure.

What is a hospitalisation insurance?

A hospitalisation insurance for employees is a group insurance that reimburses medical expenses when an employee is admitted to the hospital. It supplements the intervention of the health insurance fund and covers costs that would otherwise remain fully or partially at the employee's own expense.

Depending on the chosen plan, the insurance can cover the following, among other things:

  • Hospital and accommodation costs
  • Additional fees for doctors and supplementary room charges
  • Medication and medical treatments
  • Medical expenses before and after hospitalisation
  • Costs associated with serious illnesses

Employers can offer the insurance to all employees or to specific categories within the company. In many cases, family members can also join.

What are the benefits?

Covers hospital and accommodation costs that are not fully reimbursed by the health insurance fund.

Covers supplementary fees and room charges during admission, for example in a single room.

Covers medical expenses before and after hospitalization, such as consultations, examinations, and aftercare.

Covers unexpected medical expenses, allowing employees to maintain financial security.

Who is this insurance for?

A hospitalisation insurance for employees is suitable for companies that want to offer their staff extra protection.

This insurance can be taken out for:

  • Employees on the payroll
  • Management or specific job groups
  • The entire staff
  • New employees via an onboarding package
  • Possibly also partners and children of employees, often with a payroll deduction

Many companies use a hospitalization insurance as part of a broader employee benefits package.

What is covered and what is not?

What is covered?

  • Hospitalisation due to illness, an accident or childbirth
  • Medical treatments and medication during hospitalisation
  • Costs of examinations and treatments before and after hospitalisation
  • Room supplements and doctors' fee supplements (depending on the chosen plan)
  • Emergency medical expenses abroad (under certain policies)
  • Serious illnesses, including chronic, rare or life-threatening conditions requiring long-term and costly treatment, often extending beyond hospitalisation

What is not covered?

  • Cosmetic procedures without a medical necessity
  • Treatments not recognised by the statutory health insurance system
  • Medical expenses unrelated to the hospitalisation
  • Costs incurred during any waiting period applicable to new enrolments

How much does this insurance cost?

The premium of a group hospitalisation insurance is determined by, among other things:

  • The number of employees being enrolled
  • The average age of the workforce
  • The chosen guarantees and coverage
  • Location/residence of the employer/participants
  • The type of room (single room or shared room)
  • Any deductibles or personal contributions

Because every company is different, the premium is always calculated to fit your needs. We analyze your personnel structure and propose a solution that is attractive to employees and financially viable for the company.
