Credit insurance

Do you provide goods or services on credit? Then you run the risk that customers do not pay or pay late. A credit insurance protects your business against financial losses due to non-payment or bankruptcy of customers. This way, you safeguard your cash flow and your growth is not dependent on the payment habits of others.

Together with our specialized partners, Van Dessel Insurance Brokers helps you develop a credit insurance tailored to your sector, customer base, and international activities.

What is a credit insurance?

A credit insurance is an insurance that protects your company against the risk of customers not paying their invoices.

This can include:

  • Insolvency (bankruptcy or judicial reorganization)
  • Prolonged non-payment
  • Political risks in export (such as payment bans or government measures)

The insurer analyzes the creditworthiness of your customers and determines an insured credit limit for each customer. If a customer does not pay within the agreed term, you will receive compensation for the insured amount after file follow-up.

A credit insurance policy is therefore not just financial protection, but also a tool for professional debtor management.

What are the benefits?

Covers unpaid invoices in case of bankruptcy or prolonged non-payment.

Covers your cash flow and limits unexpected financial losses.

Covers commercial risks with domestic and foreign customers.

Cover growth with confidence thanks to predetermined credit limits.

Who is this insurance for?

A credit insurance policy is of interest for:

  • Businesses that sell on invoice with payment terms
  • Wholesalers and manufacturing companies
  • Construction and project companies
  • Exporters and internationally active companies
  • Fast-growing businesses with increasing customer risk

The larger your customer portfolio and the longer your payment terms, the greater the risk of non-payment. Companies with a strong focus on just a few large clients also face increased risk.

What is covered and what is not?

What is covered?

  • Unpaid invoices due to customer insolvency
  • Persistent non-payment after the agreed waiting period
  • Commercial risks involving domestic customers
  • Political risks in export transactions (if included in the policy)
  • Debt collection costs through the insurer

What is not covered?

  • Disputed invoices (for example, due to disagreements about delivery or product quality)
  • Sales to private individuals
  • Undeclared or unapproved credit limits
  • Internal fraud within your own organisation

How much does this insurance cost?

The premium for a credit insurance policy is usually calculated based on:

  • Your annual turnover
  • The proportion of sales on credit
  • The risk profile of your customers
  • The sector in which you operate
  • The countries in which you do business

Usually, a percentage is applied to the insured turnover. The better your debtor management and the more stable your customer base, the more favorable the premium.

What exactly does a credit insurance cover?

A credit insurance covers unpaid invoices when a customer goes bankrupt or fails to pay for an extended period. You receive compensation for the insured portion of the invoice.

Is credit insurance mandatory?

No, a credit insurance policy is not legally required. However, it is highly recommended for businesses that sell on credit and want to protect their cash flow.

How do I know if my customers are insured?

The insurer assigns each customer a credit limit based on a financial analysis. Deliveries within that limit are insured according to the policy terms.

Does credit insurance also cover foreign customers?

Yes, that is possible. For exports, political risks can also be insured, such as payment restrictions or government measures.

What happens if a customer does not pay?

You report the case to the insurer. They will initiate a collection procedure. If payment is not made within the contractually specified period, you will receive compensation.
