Yet completing the accident report form correctly is crucial. This document forms the basis for assessing the accident and largely determines how smoothly the claim will be handled.

With these 10 key points, you’ll be better prepared when it really matters.

1. Use one form and only sign if you agree

In the event of an accident, it’s best to complete one joint form. Both parties fill it in together and each receives a copy.

Important: signing is not mandatory. Only sign if you agree with the content, including the details filled in by the other party. If you disagree, mention it in the remarks and do not sign.

2. Complete the form immediately

It is advisable to fill in the form right after the accident. The longer you wait, the greater the chance that details will fade or be remembered incorrectly. What is clear at the moment may be interpreted differently later.

3. Fill in as much information as possible in advance

You can already complete several general details beforehand, such as those of the policyholder, the vehicle, and the insurance company.

This saves time and reduces the risk of errors, especially in stressful and confusing situations.

4. Be careful with the checkboxes

The form includes standard options to describe the situation. Only tick what actually applies and limit yourself to your own section.

If in doubt, leave the box blank and clarify in the remarks.

5. Describe what happened, not what you think

When describing the accident, stick to the facts. Avoid interpretations or assigning blame.

An objective description helps ensure a correct assessment and avoids disputes afterwards.

6. The sketch often makes the difference

A clear drawing is one of the most important parts of the form. It helps interpret the situation correctly and can be decisive in assessing the accident.

Make sure the situation is illustrated as clearly and accurately as possible: vehicle positions, direction of travel, road layout, traffic signs, and surroundings. Also indicate the front of each vehicle.

If there is disagreement, the sketch box can be divided so each party can draw their own version.

The more complete and accurate the sketch, the lower the risk of misunderstandings later.

7. Don’t forget witnesses

If there are witnesses, be sure to note their names and contact details. Independent witnesses can play an important role in assessing the accident and clarifying disputed situations.

8. Review everything before signing

Take the time to carefully review the entire form. Check not only your own details, but also what the other party has filled in.

Signing means you agree with the content, so only do so if everything is correct and complete.

9. Once signed, no changes are possible

After the form has been signed, it cannot be modified. Any additions or corrections must go through the insurer.

That’s why it’s essential to check everything thoroughly beforehand.

10. Stay calm at the scene

An accident can be stressful, but arguments rarely help. By completing the form calmly and correctly, you take the first step toward a smooth claims process.
