What is insurance for art & collectibles valuables?

Insurance for valuable items is a specialized insurance that insures expensive possessions individually against damage, loss, or theft. Although fire insurance or home insurance often already provides basic coverage for household contents, valuable items are usually only insured to a limited extent. For items of higher value, a separate insurance policy or additional coverage may therefore be necessary.

This insurance ensures that specific items, such as jewelry, art, or exclusive watches, are covered against a wide range of risks, often even worldwide.

What are the benefits?

Covers theft or loss of valuable items, both at home and outside the home.

Covers damage caused by accidents, for example when a valuable object falls or gets damaged.

Often covers worldwide, so your valuable possessions are protected even while traveling.

Covers the actual value of the item, based on an accurate valuation.

Who is this insurance for?

Insurance for valuable items is of interest to anyone who owns precious possessions with a value higher than what is typically covered by a standard home insurance policy.

Typical situations include:

  • Owners of jewelry or exclusive watches with a high value
  • Collectors of art, antiques, or unique objects
  • Owners of valuable musical instruments
  • People with collections such as coins, stamps, or design objects

Even if you regularly travel with valuable items, a specialized insurance policy can provide additional security.

What is covered and what is not?

What is covered?

  • Theft of valuable items
  • Loss of an insured item
  • Damage caused by an accident, such as dropping or breaking
  • Damage during transport
  • Damage occurring anywhere in the world, including outside the home

What is not covered?

  • Intentional damage
  • Normal wear and tear or ageing
  • Inadequate precautions against theft

How much does this insurance cost?

The premium of insurance for valuable items depends on several factors, such as:

  • The value of the item or collection
  • The type of object (for example, jewelry, art, or watches)
  • The way the item is stored or used
  • The security of your home
  • The desired coverage (for example, worldwide coverage)

Usually, an expert will first assess the value to determine the correct insured amount. We recommend regularly checking whether your list is still up to date so that you remain properly insured.

Aren’t my valuables already insured through my fire insurance?

Often yes, but that obviously assumes that your standard fire insurance also covers the contents (personal belongings). In addition, the coverage for valuable items in a standard fire policy is usually limited by a maximum amount per item (especially in the case of theft). Moreover, a fire policy generally bases its payout on the replacement value, which can lead to disputes with unique pieces (such as art or collectibles). In a specific policy for art or valuable items, the value is often determined in advance as an agreed value (the value listed), so you have more certainty in the event of damage and avoid disputes over amounts.

Which items can I have insured?

These can include jewelry, works of art, antiques, watches, collectibles, or musical instruments. The exact options depend on the insurer.

Does a valuable object need to be appraised first?

In many cases, yes. An appraisal or valuation helps determine the correct insured value and avoid disputes in the event of damage.

Is my valuable item also insured when I take it with me on a trip?

Many policies offer worldwide coverage, ensuring your valuables are protected even when you use them outside your home.

What happens if a valuable item gets damaged?

Depending on the policy, the insurance can reimburse repair costs, have the item repaired, or pay out the insured value.
